Applications

Bitumen Grade 30/40 is widely used in:

• Hot Mix Asphalt: Essential for bases and wearing courses.
• Road Construction and Repairs: Provides durability and reliability.
• Production of Bituminous Products: Serves as a fundamental material for various other bituminous products.

Hazard Identification

Bitumen 30/40 is not classified as dangerous according to Directive 67/548/EEC or EC 1272/2008. However, there are several hazards associated with its use, primarily related to the material’s temperature:

• Burn Risks: Hot materials can cause burns.
• Fume Inhalation: Fumes are typically not hazardous in open air but can pose risks in confined spaces.
• Dust Exposure: Cutting or drilling hardened asphalt can release respirable dust, which may contain crystalline silica, posing long-term health risks such as silicosis.

Fire Fighting Measures

• Suitable Extinguishing Media: Dry powder, foam.
• Unsuitable Extinguishing Media: Water and CO2 are not recommended.
• Special Hazards: Hydrocarbon fumes and other hazardous combustion products may be released.
• Protective Equipment: Firefighters should use appropriate protective gear, including respirators.

Handling and Storage

• Handling: Avoid skin contact and fume inhalation. Ensure good ventilation if vapor formation is a risk. Keep away from ignition sources and avoid smoking, eating, or drinking during use.
• Storage: No special requirements. Typically used upon receipt. Refer to the technical data sheet for specific details.

Cleaning

• Tools: Clean with kerosene and gasoline.
• Hands: Use a hand cleanser or kerosene followed by soap and water.
